Refurbishment strategy for MEP services supplying existing school buildings

OVERVIEW
The Perse School appointed JGC to review the existing MEP services serving the Art Department Building to determine how the existing heating infrastructure could be replaced with low-carbon alternatives. In addition, the existing ventilation system serving the lecture theatre had reached the end of its operational life, necessitating an investigation into replacement options to improve comfort and energy performance. The school is developing a wider decarbonisation implementation plan for its estate, and the solution for the Arts Department was considered within this broader context.
JGC worked alongside the school to create an implementation strategy that would minimise disruption to the building's operation and improve user comfort in the internal spaces. Key activities included a review of the building's existing electrical capacity, an assessment of the building's heat load and the potential benefits of fabric improvements, and an options appraisal of alternative low-carbon heating, hot water, and ventilation systems.
The proposed design incorporates modern low-carbon technologies to improve the building's energy performance and occupant comfort, while a new incoming electrical supply will support the upgraded services and help facilitate future estate-wide decarbonisation initiatives. The project is currently in design development, progressing towards an installed solution.
