OVERVIEW

St Hugh's College, Oxford, commissioned 5th Studio and JGC to develop an ambitious decarbonisation master plan. The college adopted a comprehensive and open-minded approach, exploring all viable options and opportunities to shape its long-term sustainability strategy. Our work involved evaluating a wide range of both innovative and proven technologies to identify what could realistically be implemented within the college’s site constraints.



The estate features a diverse mix of residential and academic buildings, constructed in various architectural styles. The developed master plan also looked ahead, suggesting ways the college might reconfigure, repurpose, and improve its existing infrastructure to meet future needs. Following comprehensive site inspections and data collection, we established a baseline energy model using operational data, employing regression analysis and detailed thermal simulations.

From this foundation, we collaborated with 5th Studio to assess the potential for fabric improvements in each building, evaluating their performance and retrofit possibilities. We then developed several customised strategies that combined various renewable technologies and outlined a practical pathway for the college to achieve its decarbonisation target by 2035.

In parallel to the development of a longer-term decarbonisation strategy, we identified a series of straightforward, low-effort measures to reduce energy use in the short term. The college has already begun implementing these ‘quick wins’ as an initial step in its broader decarbonisation journey.

The implementation phase of the master plan is scheduled to commence in 2026, guiding the college along a clear and actionable path towards its future sustainability targets.
