Heat Pump Replacement of an Existing Gas Boiler

OVERVIEW

Ely Cathedral appointed JGC to develop a design and implementation strategy for installing an air source heat pump to replace the existing gas boiler system at the Almonry Restaurant in Ely. This project followed our previous work with the Cathedral, which had involved developing a comprehensive estate energy strategy and master plan. The air-source heat pump system was implemented in April 2025, alongside a wider refurbishment of the Almonry Restaurant dining facilities.



The Almonry Restaurant features dining spaces and a commercial kitchen, including a historic stone undercroft that dates back to the 13th century. The project involved replacing the existing gas boiler with a new air source heat pump to re-provide heating and hot water. All radiators in the building were replaced at the same time to enable the heat pump to operate efficiently. To limit disruption and costs, the system was designed to retain and reuse the existing distributed pipework systems that ran within floors and walls. Bespoke radiator covers were manufactured to conceal new radiators in the undercroft from view, in keeping with the building's historic aesthetic.

Working together with the client and the installer, Infinite Heating & Energy, and JGC were involved throughout the design and construction stages. The works also involved upgrading the existing utility electricity supply and altering the primary electrical services supplying the building to future-proof the kitchen and restaurant, enabling the electrification of catering equipment. To help the Cathedral monitor the ongoing performance of the heat pump and the refurbished building, automatic metering was installed.
