Chiller replacement projects at Addenbrooke’s Hospital

OVERVIEW

JGC were appointed to provide design services for the re-provision of cooling to two separate departments at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Both projects involved the re-provisioning of existing chilled water circuits serving clinical departments with new chiller equipment. The design and installations were completed in accordance with NHS design guidance (HTM & HBN).



The Day Surgery Chiller project involved resupplying chilled water to serve the cooling coils in the air-handling equipment. The existing chilled water supply, previously served from a centralised cooling unit at a different location in the hospital, was replaced with a new localised plant. New chiller units were installed in the Day Surgery department to replace an air-handling unit. External access at the preferred location for the new plant was limited, prompting the design of a cascade system of multiple smaller chillers to meet the building's cooling demand.

The Cyclotron Chiller project involved the re-provision of chilled water to supply a close-control cooling unit at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre. New chiller units were installed within a ground-floor courtyard enclosure adjacent to the department. A separate GRP plant enclosure was provided to house new components of the chilled water system, including circulation pumps, buffer vessels, and expansion equipment. Side-stream filtration equipment was provided to ensure the cooling process water remained free of contaminants and debris before being supplied to specialist equipment within the department. Due to the criticality of the imaging equipment, the chillers were installed and configured in an N+1 configuration to ensure 100% redundancy.

Both projects were completed and handed over in 2022.
