OVERVIEW

The University of Cambridge commissioned JGC to conduct a Techno-Economic Feasibility Study for a low-carbon heat network at the Sidgwick Site, a central academic campus. Partnering with Bouygues Energies & Services and CB3 Consulting, JGC led the engineering design, analysis, and programme planning. The study focused on the technical and financial viability of air source heat pump-based heat networks, developing designs to RIBA Stage 3 to allow capital cost, operational performance, and funding assessments.



Given the site’s urban setting, with limited space for new infrastructure, spatial coordination was a primary focus of the study. JGC collaborated closely with the design team to develop proposals for new plant and network infrastructure that could operate within existing spatial constraints while addressing installation access, planning risk, noise, and cold-air dispersal. The site's varied building stock required a tailored design approach and operational strategy to optimise thermal performance and minimise heat losses, which are a significant factor in energy consumption in heat networks.

A significant design decision was to develop solutions for a variable-temperature heat network to enable higher system efficiencies, which is particularly important for implementing renewable technologies such as air-source heat pumps, where the project's financial viability is highly sensitive to operational energy consumption. The project also proposed decentralised domestic hot water production to reduce energy losses further and allow heating systems to be shut down during low-demand periods, such as summer.

The technical solutions proposed on completion of the study balanced technical feasibility, financial viability, and operational resilience, aligning with the University’s broader carbon reduction goals while ensuring practical delivery within an active, sensitive academic environment.
