Our approach was to first identify opportunities for day-one efficiency savings and easy wins to help optimise existing equipment and processes. Following a review of baseline consumption and emissions, a review of the building fabric and site constraints was undertaken to identify opportunities for thermal improvement and to provide solutions for how the school’s estate might be decarbonised through the deployment of low-carbon heat sources and on-site electricity generation via PVs Due to the highly varied nature of buildings and sites which are used across the schools' estate, there was no ‘one-size-fits-all solution’, and the approach developed and presented for each building was unique to its specific needs and constraints.

 The Stephen Perse, Cambridge, developed outcomes from the study to inform its ongoing decarbonisation plan, and several projects have since been completed to replace natural-gas-burning appliances across its estate. The organisation has also implemented changes to its ongoing heating operating procedures and controls, resulting in significant operational cost savings across its estate.
