Rupert Varley
Rupert joined Joel Gustafsson Consulting in 2023, following the completion of a Master's degree in Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where he specialised in aeronautical engineering and thermodynamics.
At JGC, Rupert has developed a strong focus on MEP design for building retrofit projects, with a particular expertise in the full electrification of building services. His project experience spans a wide range of scales and complexity — from the electrification of hot water systems in Victorian school buildings to the design of a river-source heat pump energy centre serving Darwin College, Cambridge.
Rupert is experienced across all RIBA stages, having led projects from feasibility through to construction and handover. He is equally comfortable developing detailed engineering calculations, managing contractor relationships on site, and presenting technical proposals to client working groups.
Driven by a commitment to both carbon reduction and practical, cost-effective design, Rupert brings rigour, curiosity, and a collaborative approach to every project he works on. He is currently working towards MCIBSE membership and is passionate about the role that building retrofit plays in the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.
