OVERVIEW
Quy Mill is a hotel and hospitality centre in the village of Quy, near Cambridge. The owner was looking to expand their site to incorporate additional bedroom capacity, a refurbishment and extension of the gym, the creation of a new lobby and reception space and increased car parking space. JGC was appointed to assist with the planning application sustainability statement ahead of the refurbishment.
To enhance the sustainability of the wider site, the redevelopment proposals offered extensive opportunities to incorporate on-site generation, electric vehicle charging, decarbonised heat, and high-performance fabric for the new-build elements.
The hotel complex offered excellent opportunities to incorporate PV generation, with large areas of south-facing roofs. The site already had a relatively large year-round electrical baseload, which provided an ideal opportunity to pair with a new high-output PV array. The proposed extension of the car parking facilities also provided an opportunity to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) charging network to further leverage any installed PV systems.
A new centralised energy centre was proposed to serve heating and hot water to the new building elements. Air source heat pumps (ASHPS) could be installed to provide space heating & cooling via a central, distributed piped network linked to different areas of the site. A suitable location for the energy centre was identified away from the main buildings, in a manner sensitive to the visual and acoustic planning constraints. A separate high-efficiency water heat pump system was put forward as an option to re-supply heat to the swimming pool.
The project received planning permission in 2024.
