OVERVIEW

Frank Young House is a multi-occupancy student accommodation building owned and operated by Darwin College, Cambridge. The college was awarded PSDS Phase 3B funding to replace the existing gas boiler heating system with low-carbon air-source heat pumps, re-supplying space heating and hot water.



At the same time as the heat source replacement, the college undertook fabric refurbishment measures to reduce the building's peak and annual heating load. Improvements were achieved by upgrading the building's windows and doors through a combination of re-glazing, utilising highly efficient vacuum glass in place of the previous single-pane units, and installing new triple-glazed units. Modifications were also made to the existing ventilation systems to reduce the heat loss of air extracted from kitchen spaces.

Separate heat pump systems were installed for space heating and hot water supply. This approach enabled the space-heating heat pumps to operate as a variable-temperature system, automatically adjusting their output temperature in response to external air temperature to increase system efficiency. Separate constant-temperature heat pump systems were provided to directly supply heat for year-round hot water generation. The majority of the existing pipework and radiators within the building were retained and re-supplied from the new heating system. Modifications to the secondary heating circuits running throughout the building were minimised to reduce project complexity and cost. As part of the upgrade works, a building management system (BMS) was installed to automate the new heating and hot water systems and monitor system performance.

The project achieved practical completion in early 2024.
