Our approach involved a thorough analysis of the college’s energy systems, identifying opportunities to transition from fossil fuels to low-carbon alternatives. The heat pump proposals were integrated into a holistic programme that considered costs, fabric and energy efficiency improvements, phased implementation, and long-term maintenance needs. Coordination with the college’s operational and financial planning ensured the strategy’s feasibility and resilience.

The decarbonisation solutions developed were sensitive to each site’s heritage and historical context. Consideration was given to how replacement low-carbon heating systems could be successfully integrated into the broader planning and heritage context. Opportunities for fabric improvements and wider retrofits were considered alongside heat source replacement to develop a holistic assessment approach that identifies the options available at each location.

Carbon and energy savings were considered within the college’s stated timeframe to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2038. Working alongside the project manager and cost consultant, JGC identified specific projects for each site, quantified the potential carbon-reduction savings for each, and set out a timeframe for implementing the projects within the college’s proposed timeframe to maximise its emissions reductions over time.  This decarbonisation strategy provided Clare College with a clear, actionable roadmap for reducing carbon emissions while supporting its long-term objectives.
