OVERVIEW
JGC was appointed to undertake a strategic review of Churchill College's energy and heating demand, assisting in the development of an implementation plan to achieve net-zero carbon. Working alongside Bidwell, appointed to assess the feasibility of adopting fabric improvement measures, JGC reviewed the existing electrical, heating, and hot water infrastructure to determine how the systems could be adapted to support a transition to low-carbon heating and the integration of on-site generation.
A key element of the project included a review of the existing central energy centre, which currently supplies heating and hot water to multiple buildings at the College’s leading site, and determining how this might be re-supplied using low-carbon heat sources in a way which would minimise the level of retrofit required to distributed network pipework and downstream heating and hot water services within the buildings supplied.
JGC also assessed the energy and heating demand of the other decentralised buildings also owned by the college. For each location, we reviewed existing energy demand and provided options for retrofitting a low-carbon heat source.
The outcomes of the study have helped Churchill College develop a road map for implementing a site-wide decarbonisation strategy. Since the completion of the master plan, JGC has continued to work with Churchill College to develop technical proposals for the decarbonisation opportunities identified for several buildings, including the Sheppard Flats and West Court refurbishments.
