Britten Pears Arts is undertaking an ongoing capital works programme that will deliver improvements at both its main sites, Snape Maltings and The Red House. We worked alongside the client to review current proposals and provide input on how proposed works could be developed to best align with the organisation’s wider sustainability agenda. Of particular focus was how Snape Maltings’ existing distributed heat network, already identified for modification under the capital works programme, could be adapted to future-proof the current capital works and enable the easy installation and integration of additional low-carbon heat sources in any future expansion.

At the Red House site, which comprises a series of separate buildings with dedicated heating and hot water infrastructure, our study focused on how capital works proposals could be adapted to facilitate the installation of low-carbon heat sources in each building, enabling the phased removal of oil-burning appliances on a building-by-building basis.

JGC led a sustainability workshop alongside key client stakeholders to assist Britten Pears Arts in developing a comprehensive, ongoing strategy to set direction for future works and sustainability aspirations. The outcome of this process helped establish a series of targets and deliverable actions that the client could use to set future capital project briefs and long-term operational delivery targets. This discussion and the subsequently developed strategy focused more broadly on a range of environmental issues, including overheating mitigation, decarbonisation, electrification and water usage.
